What is the Hanes Cymru app?

Hanes Cymru (History of Wales) is an interactive timeline that brings Welsh history to life. Explore thousands of years of history, from ancient times to the present day, discovering the events, people, and places that shaped Wales.

Is the app available in Welsh?

Yes. Hanes is fully bilingual, available in both English and Cymraeg. You can change the language at any time in Settings.

Getting Started

How do I navigate the timeline?

There are three ways to explore the timeline:

  • Scroll: Swipe up or down to move through time.
  • Pinch to zoom: Zoom in on a specific period.
  • Tap: Open any event to read more.

What is the difference between Full Article and Summary?

When you tap on an event, you can view either a full detailed article or a brief summary. You can choose your preference during setup, or change it later in Settings under "Article type".

Premium

What does Premium include?

The premium unlock is a one-time purchase that gives you:

  • Complete timeline with all events
  • Search through all historical events
  • Save favourites for quick access
  • Add your own personal events to the timeline
  • Interactive map showing where events took place
  • Anniversaries - discover events with milestones this year

How do I restore a previous purchase?

If you have previously purchased Premium and need to restore it (e.g. on a new device), go to Settings and tap "Restore Purchases". Your purchase will be restored automatically.

How do I request a refund?

Purchases are processed through Google Play (or the App Store). Refund requests should be directed to the respective store. Hanes Cymru does not process payments directly.

Can't pay right now?

Hanes Cymru is a passion project — any premium income just covers the running costs (developer licensing, domain, and hosting).

Features

How do I favourite and item?

Browse to an event in the timeline and tap the heart icon to save it. You can view all your saved favourites from the main menu.

How do I add my own events?

With Premium, use the "My History" feature in the main menu. Tap + to add a title, date, and description — your event will appear on the timeline.

How do I customise which events appear?

Go to Settings and tap "Timeline customisation". From there you can choose which historical events to show or hide on your timeline.

How do I change the theme?

Go to Settings and tap "Theme". You can choose between Light, Dark, or System default (which follows your device settings).

How do I refresh the timeline data?

Go to Settings and tap "Refresh timeline" to download the latest data. This requires an internet connection.

Troubleshooting

The app says "Unable to load menu"

This means the app cannot reach the Hanes API. Please check your internet connection and try again. You can also try refreshing the timeline from Settings.

How do I delete my data?

All your data (settings, favourites, personal events) is stored locally on your device. You can delete it by clearing the app data or uninstalling the app.
